ReturnSafe Overview

What is ReturnSafe?

We are pleased to announce that we have chosen ReturnSafe as our partner to keep you and the {your institution} community safe as we get through the Covid-19 pandemic together. The ReturnSafe app is a user-friendly and efficient alternative to paper screening surveys.  The faster you can inform people of exposure and to isolate, the greater the ability to contain an outbreak.

How to use ReturnSafe

    • Install the ReturnSafe app….part of the onboarding process with the ReturnSafe customer success team.

Initial Login & Setup

  • Open the app and enter the following Code: TBD
  • Sign in with your Name, Phone Number and {your institution} Email address

The first time you sign into the ReturnSafe app there is an onboarding process. You will be taken through a series of screens explaining the app and requesting app permissions.

As shown below, the welcome flow includes the login screen and a brief description of the app, and the daily recommendations to come to campus or stay at home.

App permissions are necessary to activate Location Services and Notifications.

  • Location services are only used to create a geofence around the campus.   
  • As a gentle reminder to maintain physical distance, you will also receive an alert when you have contact with a fellow community member within 6 feet for longer than a minute. This is an optional feature that you can disable.
Notifications will be used to send you reminders and other communications

Daily Screening Survey

Prior to coming to campus or going to class, every student, faculty, and staff member is required to complete the Daily Check-in Screening to receive the latest recommendations based upon individual survey responses. The screening survey should take less than 1 minute to complete. Upon completion of the survey, you will receive guidance on whether to come to campus or to contact {your institution} Health Services (your process here). As shown below, if you do not have any symptoms or have not tested positive for COVID-19, you will receive a green boarding pass which clears you to come to campus/class.

If you experience symptoms, you will be asked to stay home, isolate, and contact the wellness center (your process here).

If you have tested positive for COVID-19, you should report this immediately into the app screener.   You will receive instructions (your process…) on what to do and the Campus Health Officer will be immediately notified to begin contact tracing to contain the spread of infection.


The app provides a manual LogBook for you to add contacts.   Please log contacts if you are meeting in person with another member of the {your institution} community or are otherwise in contact with them for a prolonged period of time. You can add a new contact or choose from a list of previous contacts.

What are the federal workplace safety guidelines?

Employers have the responsibility to provide a safe and healthful workplace that is free from serious recognized hazards under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a))1) of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 1970. OSHA Guidance on Returning to Work.  The CDC also has guidelines for colleges and universities.    

What personal information are you storing and where?

  • First name, last name, Email/phone used to log in
  • Screening recommendations and contacts are stored and accessible only to designated {your institution} admins strictly for contact tracing purposes.
  • Specific screening survey answers are stored as per government requirements but are only visible to designated {your institution} administrators.

How are you securing the data?

Any data captured by ReturnSafe is stored in an encrypted, HIPAA compliant data store, and is accessible only to designated {your institution} administrators.

Do you have rules for sharing the data with third parties?

We do not share data with third parties.

What location data is being tracked and where is it being stored, on the phone or in the cloud?

Location data is only used for geofencing purposes so that contact logging is limited to campus. ReturnSafe will not track your contacts outside of designated office locations.


Will I have to login every day or does the app remember me?

After the initial login sequence, you will remain logged into the app. You will need to open the app each day before you go into campus to enable contact logging. Opening the app to complete the screening survey fulfills this requirement. Whenever possible, please open the app when you are in close contact with others, to maximize the effectiveness of automated Bluetooth contact logging.
